Odfjell expands Houston terminal

Odfjell is building a 32,000 m3 automated tank bay at Odfjell Terminals Houston (OTH) in the US to support growth in the Gulf Coast chemical industry.

Bay 13 will have nine tanks, some stainless steel and some carbon steel, and will increase the overall capacity of the terminal by 9% to 413,400 m3. They will be highly automated and will benefit from Odfjell’s ongoing digital transformation programme, including an advanced enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and automated control systems. Construction will begin in Q1 2022 and the bay is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

OTH says that the tanks will allow it to relocate and consolidate products of existing customers and optimise the use of current storage capacity for new customers and products. The terminal has been operating at or near capacity regarding specialty chemicals and petrochemicals for many years and the expansion is in line with OTH’s strategy to meet increased demand. Bulk chemical exports in the US Gulf Coast are expected to rise by 2.3 million tonnes by 2024, while imports are expected to rise by 389,000 tonnes by 2030
