UK-based fuel supplier and distributor Greenergy has signed an agreement with Advanced Biofuel Solutions (ABSL) to develop, construct and operate up to five municipal waste-based biofuel plants in the UK.

The first plant will be based in Ellesmere Port. Design work has already begun and start-up is expected in 2025. It will process 133,000 tpa of municipal waste into biomethane for gas vehicles or biohydrogen for hydrogen vehicles. The companies estimate that the five plants, when operational, will have the equivalent output of 5,000 HGVs, and will avoid the emission of 800,000 tpa of carbon dioxide compared to running the vehicles on conventional fossil fuels.

The plants will use ABSL’s proprietary RadGas technology. The process first involves feeding the waste into an oxy-steam fluidised gasifier which breaks it down into a tar-laden syngas. This then passes through a catalytic chamber which breaks down the tars. The tar-free syngas is cooled and passed through a filter system to remove residual particulates. It can then be used to produce biomethane or biohydrogen.

Nathan Burkey, executive chairman of ABSL, adds that the deal will accelerate the speed and scale of the deployment of RadGas technology.

Greenergy currently operates two waste-to-biodiesel plants in the UK and a third in Amsterdam, which it bought from Oiltanking in 2018.
